Hokkaido is Japan's largest wheat producer and Tochigi Prefecture is Japan's largest barley producer (2008 Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries data), although I had vaguely remembered that Hokkaido is the largest wheat producer in Japan. Roughly speaking, there are 6-jo barley (mainly "pressed barley", "cut barley" and barley tea), 2-jo barley (mainly used for beer), and hadaka barley (mainly used for processing and food), and in Tochigi Prefecture, 2-jo barley is widely produced.

In 2008, a barley field in Ashikaga City was introduced on NHK's "Small Journey" (only in the Kanto region), and the topic of barley became a bit of a buzz, and in the same year, this Omugi-Dacquoise won the Honorary President's Award at the Grand Confectionary Exposition. We don't really care about (or trust) awards on this site, but we do think they are a sign of a certain quality. So we went to the actual meal.


When I held the box of sweets, it was quite light, and for a moment I doubted that it was really in there. Then I took out the Omugi-Dacquoise in the box, which was the size of a koban, and lo and behold, it has a very unique appearance. The sensation of holding it in your hand is still reasonably light. When I sniffed it, I could smell something faintly, but I couldn't remember what it was.

So, I was surprised when I tried it. I was surprised by the softness of the texture. The outside is crispy but the inside is like a sponge cake, and there is a piece of white cream sandwiched between the top and bottom in the middle. When you eat it, you can feel the crispy part of the barley. I think it's like a sponge cake with the flavor of barley and the fragrance of barley flour.

Hmm, from the atmosphere of the package, it might be a good souvenir.
