Niigata Prefecture is the land of the long coastline of the Sea of Japan. Heavy snowfall in mountainous areas in winter. The prefectural capital is Niigata City. The county's bird is the ibis. It has Sado Island.
Their specialties include Koshihikari rice from Uonuma, Japanese sake (Koshino-Kanbei and Hakkaisan) and Sasa-dango (Dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves), which are known throughout Japan. Also, there are more manufacturers of rice crackers(senbei) than any other product in Japan.
Tourist attractions include winter ski resorts (Naeba, Yuzawa, Akakura, etc.), Sado (gold mine), Yahiko Shrine, Teradomari, etc.
